Ian Jones is a legendary steel pan player and composer. Mr. Jones uses his musical art to give marginalized youth discipline and hope for the future by teaching the steel pan instrument. Mr. Jones has dedicated over 30 years of his life working for positive change in the notorious Malvern community as well as the Covenant House. Mr. Jones continues to serve both as an innovative musician and social activist for the betterment of our young people today.

ARTIST PROFILE:
A native Trinidadian, Ian immigrated to Canada in the 1960’s. Renowned as an avid pan player, arranger, composer, producer, musical director and educator. A cultural leader in the steelpan and calypso art forms.

Kick off black history month with the Canadian Release of "A Winter Tale"

Dear Friends,

Celebrate Black History Month With A Winter Tale!

Frances-Anne Solomon's acclaimed award-winning film will open to cinema-goers this February!

Please join us for the official Release Launch on January 31st, at the Revue Cinema (400 Roncesvalles ave) where cast and crew will be on hand for a special Q&A session. Don't miss the After Party at Hugh's Room, 2261 Dundas West.

What's more, we have been busy working with teachers and communities to set-up a series of events dubbed Talk it Out, that uses A Winter Tale as a tool for youth 14+ to discuss issues of youth violence and gun culture in Toronto.


Set in Toronto's Parkdale Community, A Winter Tale tells the emotional story of a black men's support group that begins to meet at a Caribbean Takeaway restaurant after the shooting death of a young child. It features a talented ensemble cast led by Canadian stars Peter Williams, Michael Miller, and Valerie Buhagiar, with Lucky Ejim, Peter Bailey, p! Barrington, Ryan Glasgow, Mike G. Yohannes, Nicole Stamp, Ryan Ishmael, Shakura S'Aida, Bobby Del Rio, and Finlandia Cassellas, and also starring Caribbean icons Leonie Forbes and Denis "Sprangalang" Hall.

TARA WOODS: AS MACOMERE FIFI

Before she became 'Macomere Fifi', award-winning Calypso Queen, she was Tara Woods, Through charting Woods' progression from church chorister to Caribbean folk singer to formidable character on the male-dominated Calypso scene, this documentary reveals the evolution and inspiration of calypso, Canadian-style.

Artist Profile: Eulith Tara Woods, Sobriquet - Macomere FiFi, was born in Tobago where she performed with folk art groups prior to migrating to Canada. Macomere FiFi came to Canada in 1982 and immediately started singing with La Petite Musicale of Toronto, an artistic group whose repertoire includes folk singing, Caribbean dance and theatrical productions. Her career in calypso singing started in 1998.
