CARIBBEAN FILMMAKERS SCHOLARSHIP FUND LAUNCHED

Fas
TORONTO (July 29, 2011) – Filmmakers across the Caribbean region can apply for scholarships to attend this September’s CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution's Toronto Film Showcase and Market Access Program in Toronto.

Announcing the CaribbeanTales Scholarship Fund at a Toronto press conference last week, Frances-Anne Solomon, CEO of CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribition, said the new fund will allow filmmakers from the region and the Caribbean Diaspora to attend the festival.

But more importantly Solomon pointed out scholarship winners would have access to the highly effective Market Access incubator Program which teaches skills in the all-important packaging and marketing of films.

“The Fund supports the development of a vibrant world-class Caribbean film industry, by assisting filmmakers to create dynamic, distinctive and commercially viable films that will stand tall in the international marketplace,” Solomon declared.  She added early donor commitments to the fund had been “extremely encouraging” and validated the program.

The sixth annual film showcase, which is being held from September 7 to 17 and will run alongside the Toronto International Film Festival, engages families, youth, community groups, and the celluloid industry in a program which includes workshops, screenings, networking sessions, and other activities celebrating the burgeoning film and television sector in the Caribbean.

Solomon said she had received interest from filmmakers in Antigua, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Jamaica, Martinique and the United States; and thanked Camilio Antonio, Carl Thorpe, Charlotte Rose, Fil Fraser, Jean Sheen and Selwyn Rouse for making contributions to the fund.

This year’s showcase, to be headquartered at the popular Harbourfront Centre, will feature the launch of some exciting films, docu-dramas, and CTWD's 2011-2012 catalog of films.

The Toronto showcase, among other goals, aims to raise the profile of Caribbean filmmakers and their products, support the growth of a vibrant world-class Caribbean film and television industry, and serve as a platform for promoting the Caribbean as a premier warm weather travel destination and location for film production.

CTWD, a member of the BIM Ventures family of entrepreneurs, has hosted two film festivals in Barbados, another in New York, produced training workshops for filmmakers, and now has scores of films in its catalog.

Faisallutchmedial-810x1024
We met Faisal in Barbados earlier this year when he attended the CT2011 Incubator. This prolific Canadian filmmaker is of Trinidadian and Bangladeshi heritage.

Making the Band, a feature film that he co-wrote, co-produced and was the Director Of Photography for, has just won multiple awards at the prestigious Zanzibar International Film Festival. It won the Chairman’s Award from chairman Martin Mhando who said of the film, “This is a Knock Out! Emotionally charged and that’s what Zanzibari / African audiences will resonate with… Absolutely a charm.”  Making the Band also won the award for Best Score.

The lighthearted drama follows four young women trying to make it big in the music world with their Afro-pop band based in the most unlikely of places: chilly Montreal, Canada.

Faisal has many other projects. See: Green Dragon Productions

CARIBBEAN FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS TO TORONTO

Img_7407_-_version_2
TORONTO (July 11, 2011) – The creativity of Caribbean filmmakers will be on show in Canada this September when CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution’s Toronto Film Showcase returns to “Hollywood North”.

Now in its sixth year, the 2011 Toronto Film Showcase, and the recently introduced Market Access Program, returns from September 7 to 17, 2011 and will run alongside the Toronto International Film Festival.

The film fest engages families, youth, community groups, and the celluloid industry in a program which includes workshops, screenings, networking sessions, and other activities celebrating the burgeoning film and television sector in the Caribbean.

Frances-Anne Solomon, CEO of CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution (CTWD), reports the showcase will celebrate 10 years of Caribbean animation. It will also feature the highly successful Market Access incubator Program, now in its second year, which connects Caribbean filmmakers with industry specialists, potential partners, funders and business strategists in an intensive, three-day training.

“Last year we hosted a strong delegation of about 40 filmmakers and enthusiasts and we are hopeful a number of them will return to update delegates on the success of the partnerships they have forged and projects they have developed,” said Solomon, who also welcomed new attendees to make it to Toronto in September.

Solomon also announced a new partnership with the popular Harbourfront Centre, the headquarters for the 10-day showcase which along with the market access incubator program, features the launch of some exciting films, docu-dramas, and CTWD’s 2011-2012 catalog of films.

The award-winning Trinidadian filmmaker emphasized the region’s premier film distribution company was definitely on the move and full details of the showcase will be unveiled at a Toronto press conference on July 20 in Toronto.

Among other goals, the Toronto showcase aims to raise the profile of Caribbean filmmakers and their products, support the growth of a vibrant world-class Caribbean film and television industry, and serve as a platform for promoting the Caribbean as a premier warm weather travel destination and location for film production.

What they are saying about CaribbeanTales

The CaribbeanTales New York Film Showcase, that closed CTO's Caribbean Week in Brooklyn last month was an exhiliarating event, celebrating the exploding new Caribbean film and television industry from the heart of the Big Apple's vast Caribbean community.

The wonderful day of film-watching and discussion included a live interview with the Mighty Sparrow conducted by award-winning Trinidad-born novelist Elizabeth Nunez.

Hugh Riley, Secretary General of the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, that co-hosted the event, applauded the work of CaribbeanTales Worldwide Distribution, producers of the Film Showcase, for profiling the talent of the Caribbean and preserving the region's story-telling culture.

"At CTO we focus a great deal of our ...attention on marketing the Caribbean as the world's premier warm weather tourism destination ... We do it for the social and economic benefit of the people of the Caribbean - (But) to truly benefit our citizens we need to understand their stories and to tell them with power, persuasion and passion," asserted Riley, adding "If you really want to move from conversation to persuasion, to move both the mind and the heart, no medium can match the immersive experience we get when we sit in the dark, mind and body relaxed, focused on a film."

Keynote speaker Mark Walton, executive vice president of Corporate Affairs at The Africa Channel, talked about strengthening the bonds of the African Diaspora. Reflecting on how similar African society is to Caribbean society, he said, “We’re not connecting the dots fast enough.” He pointed out that, “The U.N. has designated 2011 as the International Year for People of African Descent and this should be a time for all people who claim Africa as their ancestral homeland to take time to understand and appreciate the impact we have made on the global society.” Walton’s family comes from Barbados.

The day incorporated two panels. The first, led by legendary producer Grace Blake, introduced new Caribbean filmmakers from Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua, Jamaica and Barbados who screened trailers of their latest films.

The second panel, entitled “Diasporic Synergies” and moderated by New School Professor Michelle Materre, gave those in attendance a chance to hear media producers reflect on co-ventures. The National Black Programming Consortium, Caribbean Lifestyle TV and Third World Newsreel were among those on the panel.

Concurrently, films were screened in LIU’s Spike Lee Screening Room: including two fantastic documentaries - Calypso Dreams, which chronicles the rich and complex cultural roots of calypso music in Trinidad and Tobago, and the riveting Fire in Babylon, a “joyous and uplifting film” that celebrates the Windies sporting triumph against the story of racial and political struggle that served as its background .

"The two films worked beautifully together—one resonating against the other in their tracing of the emergence of Caribbean culture and identity in the period following independence. As evidence of the growing strength of Caribbean film, they were mesmerizing ambassadors." wrote Lisa Paravisini of the blog Repeating Islands.

The highlight of the day came when Hunter Professor Elizabeth Nunez, interviewed the iconic  “Mighty Sparrow,” attracting quite an enthusiastic crowd. Mixed in with their dialogue, Sparrow enchanted Nunez and those present by singing snippets from his lyrics as the audience sang along.
